TTWC

i don't really know what to write about.
i've been in iraq since january and i finally get to head back to bragg in 5 weeks. right now, i'm listening to old Day by Day tracks and thinking about my life before i joined the Army and before i got married (and divorced). i admit, it was alot of fun, and i do miss it. i miss playing with James, Six, Jason, & Mike. we had alot of great times. it was the birth of the T-Town Wusscore Scene. a term i dubbed myself. it was us, Wreckless Process, HotRodBob, Fighting Tomorrow, Urban Tribe, Least Koalafied, Congress of A Crow, pretty much all the bands that were practicing at the Storage USA off of I-44 and 145th. we'd practice 3-4 times a week, and usually had a few shows a month at curly's(rip), the cave(rip), diamond billiards, the venue, boston's, pinkeye. those were awesome clubs back then. we did a couple of dfests, some blue whale festival in claremore, a short tour with Tailgunner and The Feds. we even did a reunion show a couple of years after we broke up for our good friend, Brittani's 21st birthday. i feel like an old fart talking about "the good ol' days", even though those years were only 4-5 years ago. after i get out of the Army, i will return to Tulsa, and hopefully will be able to get back together with James and Six and shred again. not for fame but because we'll be in our mid-30s by then and all we want to do is live out our remaining years in Tulsa playing music. in 2007, we planned on getting back together and playing a few more shows before i left for the Army, we even got new press photos taken (i added a few on my flickr). but of course internal conflicts within us halted that idea. but i guess we're all older and hopefully more mature. Six is still playing with HotRodBob and Out of Time. James is finishing up school. Aaron is playing with SpaceStation, Mike is around somewhere, and Jason just retired from playing bass for First Lady Assassins. me, Mike, and James have been playing together since 1999. that's 10 years. we have an idea of what we want to play when i get back. the roots stuff. punk rock. melodies and harmonies. off- tempo time signatures & long bridges. nothing too complicated. simple and to the point. when that does happen, you'll probably have long forgotten who we are. and that's something we are completely OK with.

Old Day by Day Video

so i found this hiding in my laptop, i still laugh when i watch it. i miss those times. i'm glad keith & justry are in there alot. those dudes are my best friends from waaaaay back in the day. and the house that the afterparty is at, is mine and justry's old crib. alot of old friends are there. james edited the video, and as you can tell alot of the footage is from the same night i think the time stamp is correct on there. 2003? those were the good ol' days. are you in it?

Music

note: i originally posted this in february, but thought that it is also relevant enough to post here.

i was called to put together a list of my most influential albums since i've been alive. these are from albums that are on my laptop, i probably forgot alot of albums through the years. so by no means does this encapsulate the entire scope of my music. if you disagree or agree, or have suggestions, please leave them in the comments.

these are in no particular order other than alphabetical in iTunes.
here we go!

The Egg by Shiner. 2001

shiner pulled me away from the typical punk rock style i listened to and broadened my horizons musically. i regret that i got into them after their demise. instrumental track "andalusia" made me want to become a better drummer.

Ill Communication by the Beastie Boys. 1994

this was a staple album back when i was skating alot. we'd listen to this in justry's cadillac on the way downtown and get all psyched to skate. yes, we also did "get it together" sing-a-longs.

Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins. 1993

"mayonnaise" is just a beautiful song. and "hummer" was kinda like my own teenage anthem. and the intro track "cherub rock" is the best album opener EVAR!

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins. 1995

the follow-up to "Siamese" was this double disc, play it from beginning to end, a masterpiece. every song is memorable. too bad every album afterward could not live up to this. i guess overdoses don't hold bands together well.

IV(or ZOSO) by Led Zeppelin. 1971

i had the tape version of this, and only one side worked. i was in the 5th grade when i bought it at the flea market my mom had a booth at. i remember hearing "Black Dog" and wanting to play the drums to it. i ended up getting a guitar after i heard this tape, and it was a black, solid-body Univox Les Paul. the same model Jimmy Page played with. i wish i hadn't sold it.

You'd Prefer an Astronaut by Hum. 1995

man, 9th grade. freshman year of high school. teenage awkwardness. i was the only one out of all my friends that had this album. and i could understand why, the production was sub-par, and it wasn't the offspring. but dude, the SPACE in this album is epic. i still can't can't comprehend the meaning of the songs, but the riffs and just otherworldly feel of the album is beyond definition. still in my current rotation 14 years later.

Worship and Tribute by Glassjaw. 2002

let's see. where was i. i was getting tired of punk rock, working at the mall, my girlfriend broke up with me, and one of my best friends was moving away. this album help me get through that by making me forget that friendships aren't built upon the availibility of company but rather, the common experiences you share. and made me hate that girl's guts.

Dookie by Green Day. 1994

yep, i got on this bandwagon in the 8th grade. i just remember on the video of "Basket Case" when they show tre cool's kick pedal, i wanted to play like that. 8th grade sucked. you're 13, trying to figure out your identity before you leave the pond, and go into the lake that is high school. dookie showed me to not give a fuck about what people think, and to just smoke weed until you forgot about whatever that yuppie did to you. preps suck!

VS. by Pearl Jam. 1993

again, i was in 6th grade. my best friend Drew and i spent every weekend together playing pool and listening to AC/DC, Tom Petty, Gwar, and Pearl Jam. we used sing "farts and thoughts they fade, fade away." we were dumb. we were like the real life beavis and butthead. yeah, we were those dudes in shop class.

Dude Ranch by Blink-182. 1997

i believe i got this the summer before 9th grade. i couldn't play drums that well, and this record made me feel good about it. and they were the only ones making the same dick-fart jokes we made.

Menos el Oso by Minus the Bear. 2005

i seriously listen to them based solely on their song titles alone.

Source Tags and Codes by ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. 2002

ok i admit it, the band name is what caught my eye, but the expansive production on their albums is galactic. you might be able to find it online somewhere, but on the special edition of "Worlds Apart", singer Conrad Keely wrote an awesome essay about the his opinion on structures of music. and the band members switch instruments too. me and james used to do it, but i suck at guitar.

The Satellite Years by Hopesfall. 2002

oh man, what can i say. produced by Matt Talbott, intricate guitar work, and complicated shifts in mood and key. epic.

Destruction by Definition by The Suicide Machines. 1996

these guys are awesome. fanfuckingtastic live show. i even got goth kids listening to this album. the art doodles within the lyric book is a nice touch also.

So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes by NOFX. 1997

man, this was supposed to be their final album. the production was typical fat wreck chords standard, and the songs were non-genre specific. with guest musicians and same tongue in cheek humor in-tact. at buttfuocos' band practices, we would warm up with the "nofx medley", which consisted of the first 9 songs on this album.

The Shape of Punk to Come: A Chimerical Bombination in 12 Bursts by Refused. 1998

i really don't understand any of their lyrics, but i just like the screams and beats. but their style is upside down, odd beats and time signatures. it sounds like the drummer has eight arms and the guitarist has tourette's but except with his guitar and not shouting out expletives like mike six playing frisbee golf.

And Out Come the Wolves by Rancid. 1995

there's a reason why this album is on constant rotation at Mercury. first album with Lars Frederikson on guitar and vocals. you can't even understand half the shit Tim sings.

Adrenaline by the Deftones. 1995

yeah, they were buddies with Korn, but they have gone on to do way more epic stuff than barking shit into the mike. i just picture desert landscapes with big dudes writing guitar riffs while smashing things with sledgehammers.

Fantastic Planet by Failure. 1996

again, epic drum production, spacy soundscapes and that deep, dark, almost monotone voice that Ken Andrews is known for.

The Real Thing by Faith No More. 1989

i used to want to BE Michael Patton. i want to grow my hair long and shave lines into the side of my head. and rap. the first track "from out of nowhere" is my love song to everyone. don't underestimate the rhythm section either.

Wu-Tang Forever by The Wu-Tang Clan. 1997

nate used to blast this in his room at his mom's house and she'd get so pissed. 36 chambers should be on here but i had to pick this double album.

The Colour and the Shape by the Foo Fighters. 1997

i was a big nirvana fan, and thank God, Dave Grohl was the only sane one in the band. for the longest time, we tried to figure out how to play "Everlong", but couldn't. it was because we didn't know how to play in drop D.

Nevermind by Nirvana. 1991

kurt wasn't the best guitar player, but he was a damn good songwriter. i'll say it, he's up there with john lennon. and i don't believe that psychoslut courtney wrote any of those songs.

Goldfinger by Goldfinger. 1996

yes. more rocking out in justry's caddy. we useed to blast "The City with Two Faces" aka "Fuck LA". and to this day we call keith "tim dawg" because of this album.

Understand This is a Dream by the Juliana Theory. 1999

i had a bad break up. this album got me through it. and that's all i have to say about that.

Hello Rockview by Less than Jake. 1998

this album was the follow up to losing streak. it was louder, faster, harder, and had a song about mustaches. this was by far their best album.

Duck and Cover by the Mad Caddies. 1998

back in the Buttafuocos days we covered the mad caddies. i used to play their album for people and claim it was us. so many people believed me.

And Justice For All by Metallica. 1988

my brother got me into Metallica, and i stole this tape. i listened to it from beginning to end. my favorite simply because this it was beautiful and the compositions were elegant. everything after the black album sounded like they were trying to prove themselves that they're still relevant. they are, but only as napster hating, money hungry, sober, egotistical idiots.

Teenage Politics by MXPX. 1995

teenage politics was exactly what i needed in high school. i was angry, defiant, and stupid. teenage politics embellishes every aspect i like about punk rock. it was fast, snotty, sloppy, and sappy. i didn't pay attention to the christian tones at all, considering i stole this tape from mardel's.

Tear From the Red by Poison the Well. 2002

oh man. whenever we were recording the "Winter EP", i wanted the drums to sound like this. the sound obviously couldn't be imitated considering this album was written and recorded in a huge cathedral. in sweden. hardcore should sound like this. dirty, spacy, and epic.

Through Being Cool by Saves the Day. 1999

James Cheeks got me into Saves the Day, and i made one of my sisters buy the cd for christmas. i was listening to this after my first major breakup. sappy poppy punk rock. and chris conley's voice is so sincere. added trivia: current bassist, Manuel Carrera and drummer Durijah Lang also play for Glassjaw.

BoogadaBoogadaBoogada by Screeching Weasel. 1988

ben weasel is the man. period. they sounded like a meaner, tougher Ramones. Kill the Musicians was a better produced record, but alot of the same songs were rerecorded off of Boogada. i almost got the Weasel tattooed on me, then i saw on Six's leg and thought it looked pretty gay.

Wiretap Scars by Sparta. 2002

after at the drive-in broke up, there's wasn't much to look forward to musically. until Jim Ward went back to sleepy El Paso, TX and released this atmospheric beast. i still prefer them over Mars Volta. and by the way, check out Jim's alt-country band Sleepercar.

Twisted by Design by Strung Out. 1998

we wanted to be like them. write fast aggressive songs and still be cathcy at the same time. at the end of the Buttafuocos days, we were starting to lean away from the ska and more into the heavier punk rock stuff. the stuff we wrote back then eventually led into the formation of Day by Day.

Tell All Your Friends by Taking Back Sunday. 2002

i know what you're thinking. but everytime a TBS song comes on you know the words. you know you do. thanks Ellie!

Illusion of Safety by Thrice. 2002

they influenced early Day by Day stuff. they played exactly what we wanted to play. fast, punk rock gallop beats, with screaming, metal breakdowns.

What It Is To Burn by Finch. 2002

we wanted to be finch too. when we first started Day by Day people told us we sounded like Jimmy Eat World meets the Deftones. which is exactly what i described these guys. Nate is a little dude with a BIG voice.

Wolves by Traindodge. 2007

i got into Traindodge in 2007 when i booked Hopesfall at the Pinkeye. Jay wanted to see if i could book Traindodge to play too since they were from Norman, OK. i tried, no success. after the show, Jay played me this album and this hasn't left my rotation since. this just goes to show that the best, innovative music does indeed come from the OK.

Weezer(aka the Blue Album) by Weezer. 1994

high school. sweater song. everyone sang it when it came on. probably the first song i ever knew how to play on drums was "Say It Ain't So."

White Trash, Two Heebs, and a Bean by NOFX. 1992

Justry's old cadillac came with the stock stereo. it was a 1981 El Dorado. it had AM/FM radio, and 8-track player. Justry stole this tape from some dude, and using an 8-track to cassette adapter, he played white trash for us. the adapter made the tape play too fast, and Fat Mike's off-key nasally voice sounded like the old pedophile, Herbert from Family Guy.

well friends, there you have it. again, this is NO ORDER whatsoever. it took me about a week to pull dates, and write my personal notes. all the images are from Amazon.com, which means all of this music is attainable. but if you want to stay true to the spirit of this blog, (which i thought of doing after watching Hi Fidelity the other day)

do your community some good and go to your local record store and pick it up. if they don't have it, Bart from Under The Mooch, or dudes from Starship Records will order it for you. they'll even call you when it shows up. does Best Buy do that? but if you wanna one up it, go to these bands shows and grab a copy! that $10 cd or t-shirt will help the band get to the next town, and eventually home, to record you some new tunes.
